Secret Experiments in Ballet #4 Phantom Dance

Emily Stein’s choreography is currently centered around slamming together the vocabulary and images of classical ballet with the processes and philosophies of experimental dance. Secret Experiments in Ballet #4: Phantom Dance was inspired by the Romantic ballet images of Wilis and sylphs, the supernatural incarnations of women that have become the underpinnings of the “ballerina” identity.

Sifting through familiar classical images, poses and spatial devices, SEB #4: Phantom Dance makes visible the relationship between these ethereal archetypes, and the flesh and blood dancers who embody them. Chicago jazz composer and arranger Scott Williams will perform the original score live, and the space will be transformed by the lighting design of Richard Norwood and costumes of Amanda Franck.
